There are many reasons to volunteer in USA, including the 59 protected areas presenting a huge variety of natural ecosystems:
from deserts to floodplains,
rainforest and boreal forests,
and including volcanoes, fjords, hot springs, glaciers, the world's longest cave system, the tallest trees on Earth...
You got the picture I think!
Very frequently the project in Northern America (USA here and see the page on volunteer in Canada) are very well run, and they have the added advantage that you are never far from civilisation (you usually have access to internet, a phone, a road or a plane fairly easily - compare to if you were in the middle of the African jungle for example...).
A great way to volunteer in the USA is by approaching specific research labs in one of the United States' numerous Universities. Send an email to any project you find on the internet and that you love, and ask whether they need any volunteer. Some of the projects presented here are University projects...
Volunteer with wolves through the Mexican wolf recovery program. This is an amazing program, warmly recommended.
This is if you have already some experience / training in biology, ecology, vet science, environment etc.
There are competitive opportunities to volunteer for the amazing Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS). Many opportunities are in the USA, some based in New York City, within one of WCS zoos and aquarium (check out what the Bronx Zoo does for wildlife conservation).
WCS has also projects all around the world, in 64 countries actually. You can volunteer in the USA obviously, but also in Africa, Asia or Latin America, around the themes of Health, Climate Change, Wildlife Hunting and Trade, and Landscape Ecology and Geographic Analysis.
Visit WCS volunteering opportunities for more.
I found this interesting environmental journalist internship at Berkeley, California. If you are good with your words and dedicated to the wildlife cause it does look like an amazing opportunity: volunteer for the Earth Island Journal.
If you love organising event and making things happen there are internships to promote community engagement and sustainability in Berkeley and Oakland. Volunteer for sustainability and creativity with Streets Alive!.
Volunteering for wildlife on the other side of the world can be mindbogglingly amazing, or on the contrary turn into the most horrible nightmare...
Please help others wanna-be volunteers by sharing your best and worst experiences, so that:
- the best places receive more volunteers,
- and no one gets trapped by the worst places again...
